Laser Medicine Research Center (LMRC); renamed as Center for Optoelectronic Biomedicine (COEBM) in 2000 and renamed as Center for Optoelectronic Medicine(COM) in 2012, has been established under the national policy of promotion and development of laser medicine since 1987.
This is the first center dedicated to the enhancement of optoelectronic biomedicine in this country. For the establishment of this center, the Ministry of Education provides faculty and facilities while National Science Council sponsors the research programs. Except for conducting researches, the primary responsibility of this center is to educate and promote optoelectronic biomedicine. Furthermore, this center also involves in the evaluation, refinement and development of medical laser systems. The training of the next generations of medical scientists who are familiar to the optoelectronic biomedicine in Taiwan is an important goal of this center. To fulfill this goal, education and training programs are also organized to coordinate, integrate, and support optoelectronic biomedicine.

1. Professor Jui-Chang Tsai and his group studied on
photodynamic inactivation (PDI) for bacteria,
especially multidrug resistant bacteria, and
investigated the mechanism of PDI. Using Toluidine blue
O (TBO) as the photosensitizer, this group demonstrated
that TBO-PDI produce similar photobactericidal activity
against 60 MDR P. aeruginosa strains, either with or
without efflux-pump phenotype, and 19 susceptible
strains. The advantages of PDI such as devoid of
mutagenicity, low cost, and the ability to destroy
virulence factors make TBO-PDI a potential alternative
therapy, which may overcome the emergence of
antimicrobial resistance of P. aeruginosa. Besides,
this group also assessed the prognostic value of
contrast-enhanced and perfusion computed tomography
(CEPCT) in patients with head trauma. They showed that
CEPCT provide better detection of cerebral contusions
and correlate better with long-term follow-up computed
tomography (CT) imaging than non-contrast CT scans. In
addition, parenchymal contrast enhancement on contrast-
enhanced CT of patients with contusion might suggest
the risk of subsequent enlargement of intraparenchymal
contusion and hematoma.

2. Professor Shiming Lin broke down the SARS Corona Virus
and H5N2 influenza Virus and developed their components
by atomic force microscopy (ROC Patent No. 194931).
3. Professor Wen-Yih Tseng and his colleague Prof. Van Jay
Wedeen, investigated the geometric structure of neural
fibers in the brain white matter, and the results have
been published in Science, 2012.
4. Assistant Profesor Yuan Luo has developed high-speed
microscopic systems incorporating volume holography to
acquire spatial-spectral images of tissue structures.

The center offers courses on biochips, microbiophysics, introduction to current laser application, basic laser medicine, physiological MRI and medical imaging systems. The main purpose of these courses is to provide the students from different backgrounds with crossdisciplinary knowledge and training, so the students know how to apply modern technologies such as biotechnology, optoelectronic technology and biomedical imaging to the research and development of the basic life science and diseases.
