The Department of Ophthalmology of the National Taiwan University Hospital is currently divided into five sub-specialties: Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea, Oculoplastic surgery and Pediatric ophthalmology. The Department offers a wide range of medical treatments and services; and similar to ophthalmology centers in the western countries, it contiguously introduces state-of-the-art equipments and techniques to enhance the quality and excellence in treatment service, personnel training, and research studies.
The Department of Ophthalmology was established in March of 1897 as the third department founded at National Taiwan University Hospital. The success of the The Department of Ophthalmology was Department since its establishment is indebted to the leadership of Prof. Yen-Fei Yang, who in the early years introduced and instituted the American medical system and residency program. The program was further modified and consolidated by successive department chairs including Prof. Jung-Mao Zhang, Prof. For-Tying Hung, Prof. Liang-Shi Ko, Prof. Ping-Kang Hou, and Prof. Muh-Shy Chen.
