Common urological disease entities include urolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, renal cancer, bladder tumor, prostate cancer, congenital anomalies, sexual dysfunction, voiding dysfunction and so on. Our operation rooms are equipped with cutting edge instruments like an extracorporeal shock wave machine, laparoscopic surgery sets, laser machines and so on. All kinds of urogenital problems can be well handled in our department and it has been a major urological referred center in Taipei or even the whole Taiwan area.
Besides clinical service, the faculty of the Department of Urology are also deeply involved in research works and training of medical students and residents.
The Department of Urology of the National Taiwan University Hospital has a long history. Its predecessor was established during the Japanese occupying period when the National Taiwan Univerty Hospital was called the Imperial Taihoku Hospital. Originally, urologists and dermatologists shared the same department. In 1962 , the Department of Urology officially became an independent department. Since 1993, the Department of Urology has further been divided into four divisions, including division of general urology, division of urolithiasis, division of pediatric urology and division of andrology. There are now 14 fulltime attending urologists and 19 residents working in the department.

The Department of Urology is one of the clinical departments of the School of Medicine. We are responsible for the education of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th-year medical students. We provide them with the fundamental knowledge and skills in diagnosing and treating common urologic disorders. The 3rd-year students will learn urological anatomy by attending the course of general clinical anatomy during the first semester. The 4th-year students attend the lecture on urologic diagnosis and general urological disease. The 5th-year medical students have to attend the training course at the outpatient clinic to get familiar with common dianosing examinations like renosonography, prostate ultrasound examination and endoscopic examination. The 6th-year medical students can take elective course in the urologic ward for urological training. During the course, five to ten students will be trained as a group for a period of six weeks. The 7th-year medical students take elective urological course as part of the internship.
